THE NEWBORN GUIDE

What to Pack in your Hospital Bag

It’s finally time! Packing your hospital bag is one of those milestone moments in pregnancy that you look forward to for months on end, but when it comes to getting organised it can feel a bit daunting. Midwives generally recommend packing your bag at around 36 weeks, giving you plenty of time to prepare, even if you deliver earlier than expected.

We’ve divided up our checklist into what to pack for your hospital stay and of course, what to pack for your baby. It's a great idea to talk through your hospital bag with your birthing partner so they know where everything is too. That way, they'll have everything on hand to make your life easier while you’re a little bit busy.

Checklist for Baby

1. A soft hatBabies need to stay warm and cosy once they're out in the big wide world. Choose a hat made from a breathable fabric that keeps them comfy and helps regulate their temperature.

2. Babygrows: The easiest clothes to dress babies in. Choose front fastening styles for extra speedy changes.

3. Cotton vests: Stock up on these for a warm base layer under babygrows.

4. Booties & socks: Choose cotton jersey or Merino wool to keep little toes warm.

5. A baby blanket: For the cot and the car seat. This blanket is likely to be with your child for years and is bound to hold sentimental value.

6. Wipes/cotton wool: Pediatricians recommend that babies should be cleaned with cotton wool and water in the first few weeks. Super gentle wipes for sensitive skin are the next best thing.

7. Nappies/Diapers: Pack several in two different sizes to make sure they fit! And don't forget nappy/diaper bags.

8. A baby changing bagThis can double up as your baby's hospital bag, keeping everything organised and separate.

9. A going-home outfitThat all-important outfit for the family album. Pack a cardigan, jacket or all-in-one suit depending on the weather.

10. Muslins: A sheet, a blanket, a spit-up shield . . . this multi-purpose square of fabric will become your best friend.

Mama Must-Haves

That's baby sorted; now over to you. These parent-approved essentials are a must for your hospital stay and beyond.

Checklist for You

1. Pregnancy notes and birth plan: Make sure your medical notes and ideal birth scenario are close to hand.

2. A well-stocked wash bagFill with essential items, including face wash, shower gel, shampoo, moisturiser and maternity sanitary towels. That first shower is amazing.

 3. Slip-on shoes: Hospital floors can be cold and you will want shoes you can easily slide on and off. Flip-flops or slippers are ideal.

4. Your own pillow and blanket: Your own familiar bedding will bring a home comfort into the hospital and provide you with support. Spray with lavender mist for its calming properties.

5. A water bottle: Giving birth is thirsty work. Keep hydrated with water or try natural fruit drinks for an energy burst.

6. Snacks: Keep those energy levels up throughout your stay with your favourite snacks.

7. Hairbands: Hair ties or stretchy hairbands will keep hair out of your face when you need to keep cool.

8. Dressing gown and PJs: Loose-fitting pyjamas are the best choice for staying cosy and making check-ups easy. A dressing gown for warmth and seeing visitors is also a good idea.

9. Going-home outfit: Choose something loose fitting and comfortable that you can relax in.

10. Phone and phone charger: Keep these easily accessible in a front pocket for all those first photos and messages.
