Easy On, Easy Off
Choose shoes that are simple to pop on and off, so that getting ready for school in the morning is a breeze.
Velcro, Slip-On and More
“Look for shoes with an easy fastening system like Velcro tabs," advises Childrensalon’s Oana Cioaza from our customer service team. "Think about how practical they are for younger children to use on their own.” As well as being easy for children to use independently, Velcro fastenings are also handy if your child's feet are either wider than average or on the narrow side, as they can be adjusted without affecting the line or fit of the shoe. Brands that provide extra support for heels and ankles, like Lelli Kelly, are also good choices for narrow feet, and for a wider fitting, Geox offers plenty of comfy options.
Breathability is another factor to take into consideration, so look for natural leather insoles or specially designed footbeds that actively help air circulate (another Geox speciality). For shoes that really go the distance, robust soles with a generous outer edge that act as a bumper, are always a great idea. And if you want extra resilient heels and toes, Geox also has inbuilt protection that means less wear and tear and smarter shoes for longer.
The Classics
Take a classics class with these traditionally-made shoes that feel as comfortable as they look smart.
Brogues, T-Bars and More
Classic shoes made using traditional techniques passed down through generations will never go out of style. Little wonder the Royal family are big fans of sweet T-bar shoes and Mary-Janes, which always look wonderful with crisp white socks and school tights. These shoes definitely aren't all about their smart looks though; a typically wider toe box means plenty of wiggle room for growing feet and perforated patterns are as much about breathability as they are about adding decorative detail.
While these adorable shoes make the most of built-to-last, time-old techniques, many of our more traditional shoe brands use modern innovations to provide extra comfort too. Young Soles has created a super lightweight and flexible outsole, and if you're looking for shoes that are sustainably made using vegan materials, then you will be delighted to see that Geox and many more provide classic, faux-leather alternatives.
School Trainers
Choose sports shoes with special features that will give them the edge in the playground or on the track.
Smart, Sporty and More
When it comes to trainers, Gosia Bochenska, our customer service team leader, advises: “Before you start shopping, check your child's school rules surrounding logos and colours, and a good tip is to avoid permeable mesh fabrics if they will be exercising in wet weather, as rain can get through." Some schools prefer trainers with white soles that don't mark the floor for indoor activities and we have plenty of choice in that department. Anyone searching for no logo, or at least subtle logo shoes, will find that Bobux and Calvin Klein provide some great options.
For keen sports enthusiasts, we'd advise looking for a high-grip sole as offered by Tommy Hilfiger and Geox. And for anyone whose kids have sustainability high on their agenda, we have eco-friendly designs from cool French label VEJA. As always, adjustable Velcro fastenings are a good idea for anyone in need of trainers for children with narrow or wide feet, and of course for a speedy getaway when it's time to change in a hurry!
